Family Group Decision Making

Is something going on in your family that may be affecting your children’s well-being or safety?

Do you have a decision to make regarding your children, but don’t want someone else making that decision for you?

Do you think you and your extended family know what is best for your children?

Do you want to work with your family, friends, and service providers to make the best decisions for your children?

If you said “yes” to these questions, The Village Family Service Center can help. Family Group Decision Making (FGDM) is a problem-solving process that provides families with the opportunity to make important decisions about a child in the family. Following a request for services, a Village FGDM facilitator brings together the child, parents, extended family, caregivers and service providers in order to resolve a child’s well-bring or safety.

This program is offered to North Dakota families at no charge. Just tell us when you’re ready to get started.

Family Group Decision Making Values

Charles Hall Youth Services
The Village is now providing Family Group Decision Making for the children at Charles Hall in Bismarck, a residential child care facility for children ages 12-17. Every child, and his or her family, will have the opportunity for a family conference.

“[FGDM] allowed both families to communicate their concerns for mother and children and work together to reunite mom and the kids. Our families were never open and frank about their feelings and opinions and did a respectful job.”

—Aunt

“It was amazing to see families, whom I didn’t think would be able to develop a plan, come up with a better plan than I could have thought of.”

—Service Provider

“[FGDM] brought our family together and was healing.”

—Parent

“The family conference provided a plan of care for me and saved me months of work.”

—Service Provider

FGDM facilitators are housed in five locations throughout the state, and will travel to any North Dakota county to provide services.
